THE BC INSTITUTE OF FILM PROFESSIONALS LAUNCHES RESEARCH STUDY TO ADDRESS WOMEN'S LABOUR ISSUES IN INDEPENDENT FILM AND TELEVISION INDUSTRY.

Vancouver, British Columbia: The BC Institute of Film Professionals (BCIFP) Women's Initiative Steering Committee, with funding support from Service Canada, has launched a study entitled "An Analysis of Women's Participation in the Non-unionized Sector of the Film and Television Industry". As the Steering Committee is working to positively influence the rate of growth of women employed in BC's entertainment industry, this follow up on the recently published report on "Women's Labour Issues in the Film and Television Industry in BC" will provide a picture of women's participation in the domestic/independent sector of the industry.

"One of the difficulties in this industry", asserts Eileen Hoeter, president of BCIFP "is that there are no comprehensive statistics on the size of the independent industry, or a solid understanding of the industry's occupational diversity and unique employment characteristics. This study will develop a statistical profile of the labour market to help us develop action plans and implementation strategies to encourage greater employment and career opportunities for women."

The BCIFP has commissioned Cari Green a Vancouver based independent producer to conduct the research for this study. The study will review and assess both primary sources of funding and professional development opportunities provided by juried funds in terms of who is applying for and who is receiving the bulk of the funding by gender. As well, it will gather and analyze information on the incomes and mobility of people working in this sector. The information and data collected will provide a basis for the further development of strategic plans.

Cari Green is a leading film and television producer with over twenty-five years experience in film and television, and a solid background in distribution, sales and marketing. Cari has owned and operated four independent film companies and has produced the works of renowned Canadian and International filmmakers including ScaredSacred, 2006 Genie winner and The Corporation, an international theatrical hit feature film. Previously, Cari shaped a film distribution company (Moving Images) into a viable entity for emerging and established filmmakers. Cari is a longtime advocate for the Canadian film industry, serving on many organizations in executive and board positions including: DOC, Women in Film and Video, Hot Docs, DOXA, and the First Weekend Club. Cari produced the DVD of ScaredSacred for distribution in North America in May 2006, followed by Australia and New Zealand. She is also developing an innovative project with the National Film Board of Canada, The Global Women's Memorial Website. Cari is a recipient of the Women in Film lifetime achievement award.

According to Eileen Hoeter, "This study will be instrumental in identifying integrated strategies to increase the creative, business and technical skill levels of women within the industry and guide the industry to that perfect production where there are no gender barriers, where opportunities are accessible to anyone who wants to pursue them".

The BCIFP is an alliance of film industry stakeholders formed to ensure that the British Columbia film industry workforce is highly skilled and world class. BCIFP is supported by all sectors of the industry, including labour organizations, producers, suppliers, post production facilities and public and private educational institutions. The Institute's mandate is to ensure that the BC film and television industry workforce has access to high quality education and training programs and the association acts as a point of contact for the public, government, educational institutions and the industry.
